Interactive Noise Level Monitor

Most noise level monitors for classrooms incentivize noise. IFYKY. This free one incentivizes quiet by playing a YouTube video until the noise level gets to high, then it automatically pauses until students have quieted down again. Then it automatically starts playing again. You can customize the monitor by choosing any YouTube video you want, adjusting threshold levels. I let students choose instrumental music from popular video games to play while they are working and they are motivated to keep it going. And if you have Swifties in your class, you can always use Taylor Swift instrumental playlists as well!

Important notes:

  • You will need to grant microphone permissions when you first use it.
  • The noise monitoring only works over HTTPS for security reasons.
  • The actual decibel values are approximate since they depend on the user’s microphone.
